Rise

Our Insight programmes are aimed towards first-year university students and have been designed to provide an immersive experience and exposure to the world of banking or technology. On each programme, you’ll get guidance and mentorship from our senior managers, build in-depth relationships with Deutsche Bank employees and understand what their day-to-day looks like. Take a look at the programme outline below to see if this is the one for you.

Programme overview

Rise is a four-day development programme aimed towards students of Black heritage to introduce Deutsche Bank and the different divisions we have within the bank.

During the programme you will participate in structured workshops and masterclass sessions delivered by the Early Careers team to help you improve your employability skills. We also provide opportunities for you to speak to and learn from senior colleagues and recent graduates through networking sessions and panel discussions.

You will learn about the various opportunities we offer across the bank and develop employability skills including creating your personal brand, CV and interview preparation including mock interviews, to help you navigate the application and assessment process at Deutsche Bank.

Outstanding students on the Rise programme will be eligible to apply for our Summer Internship programme for the following year.

Whilst you have chosen to apply to Rise, you'll be exposed to numerous areas of the bank and have an opportunity to attend in-person workshops, interactive or networking sessions to see what goes on behind the scenes.

Who can apply?

This programme is aimed at students of Black heritage in their first year of a three-year course, or second year of a four-year course.

We are looking for highly intelligent and driven individuals who have a genuine interest in a career in investment banking and thrive in a diverse and inclusive culture where innovation and agile thinking abound.

We welcome applications from students of all degree disciplines. While you are not expected to have knowledge and experience of banking and finance, your willingness to learn and motivation for this opportunity is key.

How to apply

The Rise programme typically takes place in the Spring, around the Easter holidays.

Students are required to apply online and complete an online situational judgement test. Successful applicants will be required to complete inductive reasoning tests, a recorded video interview and finally a telephone interview.

“The Rise insight programme was an informative and insightful opportunity for students of black heritage to gain a deeper understanding of the key fundamentals within an investment bank, also providing a platform for networking, collaboration, and mentorship.”

Why is it important to take part in a first year programme?

I highly recommend taking part in a first-year programme due to the vast number of opportunities it offers. Such as gaining access to the different divisions operating within a bank such as Corporate Finance, Global Markets, and the International Private Bank.

First-year programmes like Rise enable students to network with senior members across different sectors and most importantly helps students determine which roles suit them and their strengths best. By immersing yourself in a first year programme you lay a solid foundation for future endeavours and maximise your potential for success.

What brought you to Deutsche Bank?

I come from London, England and I’m currently reading Economics at Loughborough University. I came across the Rise programme through an online early careers recruitment platform which really emphasised the aim and importance of increasing Black representation at Deutsche Bank. Rise provides tangible skills and insight to help develop individuals on the programme and provide experience within the financial services industry.

What was the most useful aspect of Rise for you?

The personal development training helped me build on my strengths and boosted my confidence when dealing with my areas of weakness. The numerous connections made during the internship, whether it be with fellow interns or the amazing people who currently work within the bank, have allowed me to gain further insights and, overall improve myself.

What surprised you about Rise?

It was inspiring to witness the diverse perspectives and innovative ideas that were shared, which contribute to the continued growth and inclusivity within the banking industry and at Deutsche Bank. Additionally, I was surprised by the level of investment the senior figures had in the programme. Division heads spent hours explaining how they aim to increase inclusivity within the bank and provided great pieces of advice to help us on our journeys.

Why is it important to take part in a first year programme?

The programme will give you a taste of the world of banking and help you decide whether this is an industry you can see yourself working in. It is incredibly broad which allows you to learn from people in many different teams within the bank as well as connecting with other interns who may go on to do the summer internship and even the graduate programme with you!

What brought you to Deutsche Bank?

I had just started studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford and after speaking with a friend who had interned here, I decided to apply to the Rise programme. Everyone I met was so welcoming and really made me feel like I could ask all the questions I had. It was also incredibly reassuring to see for myself just how diverse the bank is. The culture is such an important part of being able to thrive and not just survive in a workplace, so it is important to find the right place for you!

What was the most useful aspect of Rise for you?

Rise really helped me improve my technical knowledge and understanding of how the bank is structured in a way that was fun and interactive. The activities we did and the regular opportunities for networking sessions meant that I learnt more about myself and the skills I had. As someone who is very involved in social activism and campaigning, I was also delighted to hear how DB has countless projects dedicated to having a positive impact on our communities!

What surprised you about Rise?

Being able to attend sessions and ask questions to people who are senior within the bank was quite a surprise. I’d definitely recommend that you make the most of this and learn more about how they were able to navigate their career. I guarantee you’ll be surprised just how many people in the bank started off on a similar insight programme.

Why is it important to take part in a first-year programme?

First year programmes are a great way of putting your curiosity into action. They allow you to gain a better understanding of the industry that you’re interested in as well as the opportunity to ask questions and network.

What brought you to Deutsche Bank?

I come from London, England and I am studying Economics at the University of Bristol. I wanted to learn more and gain hands-on experience at an investment bank with great international coverage and a well talked about work culture.

What was the most useful aspect of Rise for you?

I was able to further develop my understanding of how an Investment Bank runs and figure out which parts excite me the most. It was great to network with other interns and see some of them also participating in the summer internship programme. The interview advice given through direct one-on-one mock interviews with HR was also particularly helpful.

What surprised you about Rise?

The most surprising aspect of Rise was how much of the work culture I was able to experience in such a short amount of time. It was evident that the people at Deutsche Bank were extremely passionate about their jobs and eager to pass on their knowledge and advice to their interns.
