Employability Skills

As part of our commitment to the professional development of students and graduates, we have designed a series of skills sessions that will help you to understand what employers are looking for in potential recruits, recognise where you have used these skills before and help you to understand how to articulate these in any recruitment process.

  • Being a lifelong learner

We developed this taster skills session on Being a lifelong learner as our experience at Deutsche Bank shows that those graduates who consistently show a desire for self-improvement by continuing to challenge themselves, proactively learn new skills and gain feedback, will succeed at work, stand out from the crowd and fulfil their potential.

  • Building resilience

In the workplace, things do not always go to plan.  Failure is inevitable at some point in your career. How we respond to the situation when it arises is all about resilience.  How receptive are you to take on feedback, do you actively seek it? and how quickly can you bounce back and learn from your mistakes?  Building resilience is a gradual and acquired and strengthened over your career but these building blocks will make you aware of some strategies to start strengthening your resilience.

  • Building your influence

No matter what your role, achieving more influence in the workplace is critical for success. An important part of any working relationship is how you go about getting commitment and buy-in from others to do the things that need to be done. So, how do you motivate colleagues from all levels to support your initiatives and adopt your ideas? How can you become a go-to person that others look to for guidance and expert advice? Building your influencing skills is the bedrock of a successful career.

  • Embracing change

As the world is changing at a rapid pace our business has to adapt, flex and change on a daily basis.  Therefore a key skill to develop for your future career is the ability to deal with change.  In the world of work it’s fair to say that change is the only permanence and uncertainty is the only certainty.  As you start your career, the ability to remain open-minded about change and to see the opportunity that it presents will create real value for your team and your organisation.

  • Managing yourself

In a workplace where you might be working as part of a global team or spending part of the week working remotely, as many of us do here at Deutsche Bank, self-management is critical. This session aims to help you identify how you act like your own ‘project manager’ for example, how to manage your time and energy, set goals and prioritise to be your most productive all whilst coordinating your own work with that of your team.

  • Networking to your advantage

When you enter the workforce, an understanding of the importance of networking in business is critical.  Building and maintaining a network will be central to growing your career and you will reap the benefits through learning from others, exploring areas of business, introducing you to others and above all creating opportunities. We are an organisation of over 75,000 people in 55 countries so your opportunities to build your network at Deutsche Bank are endless!

  • Developing a personal brand

We hire our employees based on their unique strengths as individuals. So being able to define and articulate what makes you unique and what you want to be known for in your career is essential - not only to navigate any recruitment process but to be known for these attributes and behaviours in the workplace. This is called your personal brand and this session will help you to identify and articulate yours.

  • The creative problem solver

Working at the forefront of the financial sector means that we are often faced with unprecedented challenges and our clients look to us to provide the solutions.  In fact most people here will tell you that finding a solution to a problem they've never encountered before is a regular occurrence. That’s why problem solving is a highly valued skill at Deutsche Bank.  Understand some useful approaches to creative problem solving in this short introduction.

  • Understanding yourself and others

Developing your emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and to demonstrate an awareness of the people around you and their emotions. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence know what they're feeling, what their emotions mean, and how these emotions can affect other people. At Deutsche Bank, interaction with your colleagues and our clients is quite simply the way we do our business.  Successful interactions with others, for example, demonstrating an understanding of their pressures, their workloads whilst showing strong listening skills and empathy are examples of emotional intelligence and developing it is essential for success.
